just do anatomy studies as a warmup imo

if it's the first thing you do, you'll have an easier time learning; the longer we do something the less we take in the information we need. plus, when you figure something out you can immediately use it in a full drawing.

i've tried grinding before- anatomy studies for 3-6 hours straight. i regressed in skill. i'm doing one study a day in the morning and my skill is improving way faster than before. some people are better at grinding, some aren't.

it can be both. i've done in-person life drawing, pose refs, breakdowns of muscles, bones, and shapes, and i consider all of those anatomy studies.

think about what you're struggling with or unmotivated by, then think about what would be fun to learn. pick something that's between those and don't think too long on it. if your drawings are stiff, do poses. if you hate drawing legs, do that. etc.

I won't count this as a DAD entry but I'll post it here.
I will only count brush to canvas, pencil to paper, etc...
went to Lowes bought some 2x's and planed off a corner leaving the raised edge which would be the outside edge of my canvas. Used my miter to make 45-degree cuts in the wood where the stretcher will join then used a square to make sure it was straight, drilled holes, then screwed them together. I measured corner to corner and its equal and its not lop-sided.
Raw 12-oz canvas, mounted tight enough to make a drum sound when hitting it with my brush. then I cooked up some rabbit skin glue and applied the first layer, which I just did a little while ago, just before I posted this.

Got any tips for actually forming the habit of DAD and sticking to it? My biggest issue is that my consistency just keeps slipping, and then one of the missed days suddenly turned into over a year.

Link drawing to something else you do every day. Draw before or after sleeping, eating (lunch, breakfast, or dinner), showering, etc. On the subject of letting things slip, be harder/more gentle with your mistakes. Idk if it's a matter of not giving a shit about yourself and your art, or being so hard on yourself that you can't even bear to look at the canvas, but either way, you need to adjust your self-perception, in order to become more effective at what you want to do. Lastly, you need to find something you're obsessed with. It can be anything, really, but you need some part of the art or the art-making process to fixate on, in order to get the ball rolling. I agree with the "make it a habit" one. Do whatever it takes to really commit to doing art every single day for like 2 months. people say it should only take a month, but better safe than sorry. And I mean do commit. Don't make excuses, cancel stuff if you have to, make it so that you CANNOT fail no matter what. Having a long running project can also help, knowing what to draw on any given day can really help in my experience. of course, if you wanna draw something else, that's great, but always have a backup. Something like a series of drawings relating to a single topic, drawing fanart of your favorite series, drawing different types of birds, whatever. Just anything you can fall back on that isn't just studying.
Study as well of course, but sometimes you will not feel like studying, so have something else as well.
Also, don't worry about the long haul at first, just do it one day at a time.

And once those 2 months are over, don't just say "oh well it's over, guess I can stop trying". You still need to show up, but hopefully you will feel like it's natural to show up.

Obsession is necessary, but you can build that obsession.

And if you do end up missing a day for whatever reason, idk, you're sick? No you didn't. Don't tell yourself you failed. Just pick it back up right where you left of and basically ignore that missing day. Sure, your streak is gone, but that's just a stupid number. Just continue going. Missing a day here or there in the grand scheme of things is not important, as long as you don't take it as an excuse.

First, use a pomodoro timer https://pomofocus.io
Set yourself to draw at least for 1 hour (two 25min, two short breaks in between). Put some music in the background and draw.
After a while, you won't need using it, but pomodoro is still useful to keep focus and avoid lesions to your hands.

Second thing which helped me was drawing things I actually enjoy/are invested. If you only do studies, you eventually will burn out. If you want to draw a waifu or your favorite gun, do it while using references (its still counts as studies or at least, applying what you learned)

Posting on DAD and showing to your friends your stuff is another incentive. Small things like keeping a streak and tracking your progress will make the process more meaningfull and interesting: don't compare yourself to others and instead, with yourself.

I will try my two cents on the pile as well.
First of all I will only focus on actually building that habit. Not what you should do.

But if you are having quite a lot of trouble trying to keep that daily habit going that is okay. I think the first step is not really be harsh on yourself, because changing in hard and quite honestly a lot of people can't even go over the first step. Learning how to be forgiving with yourself is quite the crucial first step, even if you fail a lot, when trying to form a habit you should remind yourself that NO ONE changes who they are in a single week, month or even a year.
Imagine being a NEET for YEARS and finally trying to do something with your time. You aren't going to undo YEARS of bad habits in just a couple of months. It might take years to change who you are.

Now how do you form a habit? The Atomic Habits book do tell you to start small. The other anons have the right idea. but you have to ask yourself. Are you consistent with those tasks? Do you actually eat lunch or breakfast or dinner every single day? Because the key issue here is that if you attach "Drawing Habit" to a inconsistent previous habit, you aren't going to build "Drawing habit" that well. Because you don't have clear, defined and consistent triggers to make you start drawing. You can set a specific time for you to start drawing which or you can do the spontaneous way: If you remember about drawing, you should immediately draw something.
The key takeaway here is: have CLEAR, DEFINED AND CONSISTENT triggers for you to start drawing.

Sorry I deleted my reply by accident and was having a pretty big melty.
But what I was going to write is:
keep your initial goals simple, for example: If you keep thinking about doing a study or a demanding drawing you might be overwhelmed and not draw at all. If you are trying to build a habit you should start small. Don't focus on the quality of your drawing but focus on building the habit itself.
If you are feeling like not doing it, then simplify your goal even more. You can keep simplifying it until you reach something so stupid that you will do it. Like opening up your drawing app and drawing a single line. It's so small and simple that you will go "Oh wow this is pretty stupid, I can do that in 20 seconds or less". But by actually committing and following through with your habit, you will slowly build towards towards making that new habit into a concrete one.

And another thing: Say that you done all of that, that you have opened up your drawing app and made a line, but you keep the momentum going and then without realizing you have done a study. It's important to keep your goal and your mindset about it the same. Just because you over archived something doesn't mean that you can skip a day "Because you did well over what was asked for you to do" nor you should set a new goal because you have over archived. Your goal tomorrow is to open that drawing app and do a single line. It stays the same. Moving your goal forward just because you did something greater is going hinder your future self. Because it's going to leave you overwhelmed when you aren't in the mood to draw or not in the zone.

So, I put on my third layer of rabbit skin glue. I've been sanding it down after every layer to get the surface smooth. With a 12-oz canvas - an actual floor tarp lmao - there's going to be threads sticking up everywhere so I have to sand it before I put on the rabbit skin glue and then after every layer. so now, I'm waiting for it to dry real good. I have a fan blowing air on it, but I have to go and spin it around to get the other side to dry real good too. After that I sand it down again, and if I'm okay with it, I put a layer of gesso - sanding that smooth too. I don't know what I'm painting on it yet, but its a 2:3 ratio picture - 24 x 36 inches and I still have no clue what's going on it. I might have to finish the other painting I'm working on.

Now I have a fresh 24 x 36 canvas. Same proportions as a full frame 35mm camera.

Nah man, I didn't leave because of anyone. I just didn't have time to post on /dad/ since I started working. I've tried doing the whole "fuck it I'll just use dad to motivate me to practice" but I think I just don't have the drive to keep uploading without the social aspects of dad + drawing all day only to do practice after work hours isn't something I've managed to do consistently yet. Problem is I had a testicular infection many years ago (didn't really tell me the cause, he just said might just have been a viral infection that migrated all the way down there), and when I went to get diagnosed I had a gay doctor. I'm not homophobic in the slightest, but I genuinely felt molested by the end of it even tho he did nothing wrong.

It was just a very weird experience, which is why it makes me hesitant to get checked. I will tho, if it continues, just want to take a few days to keep checking it myself, just to make sure I'm not simply mind fucking myself.

We gather here today to mourn the tragic, untimely passing of our beloved Do Art Daily thread affectionately known as “Dad.”

I didn’t know Dad for long. In fact, I had just started posting. We barely had time to exchange our first awkward doodles before he went out to get a pack of sketchbooks(or maybe just lost his streak) and never came back. Yet somehow, in that short time, I got attached. There was something magical about his tired old face the gentle encouragement, the “keep drawing even if it’s cursed” energy.

Dad wasn’t perfect. Sometimes he forgot to give feedback. Sometimes he’d vanish for days. But he always believed in us… or at least, he believed someone would post something eventually.

Now he’s gone, and we’re left holding our sketchpads, staring into the digital void. But let’s not cry too much Dad would’ve wanted us to keep drawing. To stay hydrated. To remember that “finished” is a myth.

So, farewell, dear thread. You may be archived, but your spirit and your questionable anatomy studies live on in our hearts.
