Why are they so prone to authoritarian dictatorships that kill half the population? It's been 5,000 years of this.

Fascism is the end state of a civilization. It only breaks due to outside competition. In no other time will it fail. China is well protected by mountains and a desert and cold ass mountains and rivers. So a society can settle. All societies will turn fascist. It's just physics. Everything metaphysical and physical are subject yo entropic force. It's like a rock tumbler and your society is a rocket. Eventually after enough transformation and break offs you get a marble. Fascism is that marble. It can react and maintain balanced in any system. However the system must be closed because it can only reach a certain size and shape because of that system if it encounters are larger rock it will be crushed as it's put in a rock tumbler just like it. I can do a chemical analogy but the rock tumbler is the easiest

They got good external barriers + started way earlier + not so many internal barriers, the north especially is just one big plain, so any conquerors will take the entire thing not just a part of it + there's so fucking many of them, and without adopting their existing administration it's impossible to effectively govern and tax them all

These didn't exist anywhere before the 20th century. Virtually all of them were created and modeled after the USSR, from Arab Nationalist dictatorships to China

You have a relatively confined area like what is known as China with enough people the weak parts of the society will be broken off and eventually it will become sphere like. Fascism is a sphere. It can change it's direction at any time and address any threat instantly. Everything is unified around one central ideal. It is the end state of any isolated civilization
