Probably just geopolitics. We supported them a lot after independence while the US tried to bully them. Plus cultural exchange programs. After the war in South Tibet/Arunachal Pradesh the ideas of the 5 principles of peaceful coexistence and "hindi chini bhai-bhai" became obsolete and they found a new friend, and rebranded the idea as "hindi rusi bhai bhai". Khrushchev even ordered one middle school in Moscow to teach hindi as a subject

we like Indians. but they don't particularly like us.

Japan invested a lot in India, idk if ODA program was involved or not but economically they did help out.
Plus Japan is one of the few countries that still have a largely positive image of India

Geo-political reasons aside, I personally think slavs are cool. Also the Russian torrent scene is kino, got to watch some of the rarer movies because you guys kept seeding them even after 20+ years.
