Most conflicts have a rate of 1:9 or higher, which goes to show you that in such a densely populated area there was an effort to avoid civilian casualties.
Also, the fact that there are children there doesn't mean that you cannot attack - let's say that terrorists could do a massive terrorist attack, and then go back to their enclave and know that there would be no retaliation since there are children there. there's a very good reason that this is not the world that we live in.

The lands were never theirs to begin with, back when the british were here a little less than 90% was british owned land that was completely empty.
Also, a lot of Arabs came here in the early 20th century after jews economically devloped this place, most of them weren't here for very long before the war of independence.
They could have accepted the partition plan and had their state by now, but they refused.

The Palestinians didn't have a full fledged State: there was a British mandate and the asset of the region was highly adjustable.
The Palestinians should have accepted the Israeli presence as there was a good reason for it and it would bring development and opportunities for all, and cooperate with Israel.
The Israeli should have accepeted the partition in two States and not try to grab extra land at every opportunity but recognize the right of the Palestinians to have their own State.
