Those who have studied ancient Greek well at school can understand it if they've not forgot it, modern Greek is much closer to Koine (common) Greek that was spread in the Macedonian empire and Byzantine Greek than ancient Greek, Koine is a simplified version of ancient Greek yet still old and they're quite different but mostly with the same vocabulary
