Hiragana is super cute and very easy to learn. I can understand not liking kanji (although I think they're cool), but their written language would not function well without it. A lot of words would have to be converted into phrases because they're only used in written form and have too many homophones to be quickly distinguishable outside of the common contexts.

A lot of new words were invented with on'yomi readings from Chinese hanzi, but why would they replace their oral language with a written language? It's not reasonable, so they allowed for using different readings and it became a very complicated system for foreigners, but for a native they already know the spoken language which makes it easier to remember all the readings.
