Irish or welsh, what should I learn?
Hi anons I write to you because Im wondering which of these two options should I pick. Im spanish and I know they are not really useful, but I love to learn languages, Ive been studying latin for two ywars by myself, in september I will continue learning german. But I dont know why this kind of languages attract me a lot. I would like to learn greek (ancient or modern) too. I would learn vasque too I dont know. I enjoy to discover how these minor languages work, its amazing for me.

My girlfriend is half irish, but neither she or her father speak irish (gaeilge), only her granparents know a little bit of it. So for her I think irish could be good to learn. But welsh is a brithonic language, spoken by those who lived under Rome, and has some latin influence and it is related to King Arthut. So I'm a little more attracted to it.

What should I do anons?

Welsh because there is a lot more media and resources available to learn the language and more people that speak it.
also a bit easier than Irish

this
welsh is a real language and gets a lot of support from the governments of britain and wales whereas only larpers speak irish

Yeah but in a certain way irah being in danger makes it more important to learn it isnt it?

Irish*

But it is true that it must be admitted that welsh speakers have defended welsh more fiercely than irish, although it is also true that England mistreated Ireland much more

I started getting interested in welsh after I discovered this song

Welsh and it isn't even close, northern Welsh people actually speak Welsh and not as a cringe political display of national identity but just because they just speak it.

Im not gonna lie anon, I despise England, so I dont care that much about if irish speakers just do it to piss you off. I do not want to offend you or anything but thats how I feel.

Welsh, because it's an actual language that people use and speak on a daily basis, and not moribund like every other Celtic language. It also has more fluent speakers than all of the other languages combined.

Well Breton is still hanging there. Its a real shame most of them are dying. If you loose it, you would be loosing a key piece of Britanias identity. It would be the same if vasque or galician dissapeared

Yeah thats true, even with latin Im in a group of people that speak it. Instead I could only use Irish with my girlfriends grandparents so yeah, it is not the best idea. But I have no connection with Wales otherwise so thats why I doubt about it.

Anyway, I would enjoy learning either one just for the pleasure to learn

your girlfriends grandparents probably don't actually speak it

Now anon, you truly pressed the right bottom jajaj.

Genuine question, is that really true? I mean, there just half a million of welsh speakers, in comparison to England thats nothing.

Also, I dont know if english people really learn another language, each time I have met an english they only speak english of course. I know you dont need that much to learn other languages because yours it the lingua franca, but wouldnt english people be interested in for example learning welsh? I mean it could be a cool way to return in a certain way to the original roots of Britania

Both of them sound magical too me, in fact every language is special, but being european Im more interested in european languages, both ancient and modern ones.

By the way anon, I think Ireland should pick another flag, I prefer the old one, it has way more personality than just 3 colors

Imagine being an English person in Wales (and there are many of them), and Welsh nationalists start talking about how they need to increase the number of Welsh speakers in the country, and then start jibber-jabbering away in their incomprehensible druid speak while casting unfriendly glances at you.

there are a huge amount of anglos that live in wales, I think around 20% of the population of Wales are english people living here, they are not happy when they encounter the language.
you'll genuinely here a lot of anglos hate the welsh language and insist it is stupid and should be forgotten, you won't encounter any english interested in the language, many are very hostile to it.

Nah, I hate England because of your history as nation, not because of the average Joe. I just love to learn languages, and the celtic languages are very interesting in my opinion, specially due to their resilience through the centuries which give them the underdog attractiveness i guess.

>their incomprehensible druid speak while casting unfriendly glances at you.

Jjajajaja ok that made me kek. Its a little bit similar here in Spain depending on the region, for example In Asturias or Galicia they have their own languages but spanish people do not mind them, because they are friendly towards us, then you have the catalonians, which could be more hostile. In these cases thanks to being romance languages we understand them almost completely without knowing the language so they can not plot against us in front of us jajaja. Then you have the vasques, who could be discussing how to put a bomb under your car in front of you and you would not know it. Nevertheless I believe every language should be protected

What I dont understand is what do these english people expect living in Wales, of course they will speak welsh, and they will try to protect it and expand it in their own country.

Most ethnic Welsh people can't speak fluent Welsh, and the ones who do are more likely to exhibit anglophobia. And it's not like these English people moved in last Sunday, most of them have been there for generations, sometimes centuries. I mean, if the Welsh nationalists get their way, one day every single English person living in Wales will have to learn Welsh to engage in public life. I can only imagine how aroused that would make them.

I don't really have any stakes in this fight but yes it's true. The English have this funny habit of expecting to be treated with courtesy and dignity even though they treat just about everyone else with veiled contempt which very quickly turns into open contempt as you can see in this very thread. Sometimes on the internet you stumble on people complaining about how "rude" the Welsh are. I wonder why!

I guess it depends on who you meet. I have met some irish people (my gf is half irish) and they were not like that. I also met once a group of irish here and they were really friendly, I started speaking with them a little while they were singing songs.

But yeah, If I had encounter such kind of humanoids I would have felt the same
