That was the British. They didn't like Iran's policy of oil nationalization because what is now BP had made most of the equipment they would use for their oil extraction and got butthurt and begged the US to help them stage a coup. The recent history of revolutions/coups in Iran have been because the British were greedy and begged the US to help them to get oil money.

They left the globohomo contract, they got pariah'd, simple as. I find their theocratic state quirky and interesting and wish we would leave them be.
