She lived her entire life in Brazil, that's like saying Carmen Miranda is Portuguese because she was born there.

She had Jewish genes, was raised in a Jewish family with Jewish values, went to a Jewish school where she studied Hebrew and Yiddish, and only got Brazilian citizenship at 23 so she could marry a diplomat. When she died, she was buried at a Jewish cemetery. Oh and she became a famous writer instead of a drug dealer's girlfriend

Her nationality was Brazilian. Her genetics, family upbringing, and education were not Brazilian but Jewish. That's how she got into the best school in the country, went on to study law at a top law school, was hanging out with diplomats despite coming from a dirt poor family, and became one of Brazil's greatest writers.

If your takeaway from this is to be proud of Brazilian nationality, instead of being ashamed of Brazilian genetics, upbringing and education, then you have psychological defence mechanisms beyond my comprehension

You can be Jew and BR at the same time.
I'm Italian and BR at the same time.

Brazil is a nation of immigrants.

No. Brazil in 2025 is a better place to live than Europe. I mean in the long run. God knows what will have happened to Europe in 40 years when at best I'll be old and frail.

Clarice Lispector gets a bad reputation because of Brazilian teenage girls posting fake quotes of her on social media, but she's a great author. I only rank her behind below Machado de Assis in Brazilian literature.

If you're into modernist "stream of consciousness" prose like James Joyce and Virginia Woolf you should read her books.

So were many Brazilians -- we have a large Ukrainian community.
You can become Brazilian. And this was even more true in the first half of the 20th century.
Other foreign-born Brazilians include Otto Maria Carpeaux, Paulo Ronai, Eliseu Visconti, Alfredo Volpi, Victor Brecheret, my ancestors, some of my cousins, my cousin's daughter etc.

Yes, you do. Do you know what they call themselves? Ukrainians. Do you know what they call non-Ukrainian brazilians? "Blacks" (chorni)

Why is it less true today?

To be born, to grow up and to struggle culturally with the traditions and daily life of Brazil.
My DNA is totally European, I have nothing European about me. I went to a Brazilian school, all my friends are Brazilian, my tastes and all my daily life are related to things from Brazil, all the popular festivals I attend are Brazilian, the food I eat every day is Brazilian, my worldview is intrinsically Brazilian.

Clarice wasn't born in Brazil, grew up with Jewish traditions and and spent her childhood going to a Jewish school with other Jewish kids learning the Jewish worldview and way of life
So yes, perhaps she really is less Brazilian than yourself?

She chose to be Brazilian, and Brazil accepted that.

The state of Paraná is literally known as "Brazilian Russia" because of how many Slavic immigrants it received and OP thinks an Ukrainian-Brazilian is something novel.
