For example, if the point of punishment is to act as a deterrant, focus more on preventing people from doing bad things in the first place. If the point is to help the criminal realize what they did was wrong, give them a chance to become a better person. And if they honestly are able to do so, there is no reason to keep them from society. But if the point is just blind vengeance, it helps no one, all it does is create more suffering in a world that is already full of it.
