North Australia has less consistent annual rainfall and the soil is less productive - Indonesia has heaps of volcanoes that produce fertile soil that Australia doesn't have.

>Is it empty because of a lack of infrastructure and inability to support a big population? Or do people just not want to live inland?
A bit of both. There are inland cities like Canberra, Toowoomba and Ballarat but they're usually not far from a major coastal city and are all in the temperate climate zones.

Alice Springs only exists because, as the name suggests, there is a water source nearby, and its on the road from Adelaide to Darwin.

Alternatively you have Mount Isa which exists entirely due to the resource extraction industry in the area.

People don't just say "here is some open land, lets build", you need a reason and a means to survive.

Both. The government also has no interest in people leaving the major cities, since it would crater out inflated house prices and mean they have to build infrastructure. A lot of areas of the desert (except the middle) are also about the same temp as it gets in Vegas or are even cooler in some cases, but there's no way we'd ever get something like that, not even a shitty Phoenix or Albuquerque.

Mixed bag on our tax dollars. Our health system is good (a little burdened at times, but overall good since it's free) and the roads are well maintained in the highly urban areas. There's also a good amount of public transport, especially in Melbourne (infamous for having the largest tram network in the world) and also a subway system, constant trains, buses etc.

Major cities definitely get the most cash injection and attention from the government, while smaller cities are second class.

it's because of water, the American west (and other places that look dry but support people) are able do that because they have glacial melts from tall, all year round snow covered mountains. Not even Mt Kosciuszko has snow outside of the winter months.

We also generally have shit soils

The areas where we could genuinely build new cities are the northern rivers region of NSW (the whole region from the sunny coast to coffs is probably the best land in Australia), Margaret river in WA and Cairns (due to the tablelands). All fertile and get enough water (often too much)

>>211751614
The Australian beaucracy, as much as people complain about it, is remarkably efficient for a public service. It's why Australians tend to still have high trust in government, stuff does get delivered.

The major cities are genuinely cleaner, nicer and well run than anywhere else I've visited in the western world and the region are well maintained given how sparse they are.

The only real problem we have is housing due to a combination of immigration (both too much and a lack of trades), stupid housing investment incentives and NIMBYs.

They grew around industry. Bendigo had one of the richest goldfields on the planet, people came in droves, and once a city is established it becomes self-sustaining. Sheparton is based around agriculture in a similar way.

the one thing that truly boggled my mind about America when I learnt about it is how nearly every government post (like chief prosecutor, judges, sheriffs, sanitation) are elected. How the fuck does the public know about who is suited for these roles. It just seem like you get people good at raising money for themselves and not actually competent people.

Is Compton a bad thing? I'm not familiar with it. Our taxes defienently go to work for us, because people get really pissed off when we don't see it making a difference. It's most likely helped because our taxes are so high that we get irate if it's not being used in a way we can actually notice.

People in big cities tend to hate big cities, and Sydney is about as big as they come. It's overtly expensive and busy, so I can see why people would hate it. Melbourne is one of the outliers in infrastructure since it has an insane amount of focus on public transport and new projects, while some cities like Adelaide and Brisbane drag their heels on improving infrastructure.

I'm a Brit-German who has lived in the UK, Germany and is now in Australia and Australia is by far the best one in terms of public services being responsive and generally competent. Some politicians openly do a shit job but they got an entry on their repertoire to show to show on a ballet and boom theyre elected by the public. Thats how Chesa Boudin, the son of a terrorist, got his gig ruining San Francisco. But honestly, since we have so many incompetent self serving politicians, it's best that these positions are elected. I don't trust any governor here to know what good merit looks like.

OMGs?

Abbos are almost like an IRL version of racial caricatures, in that they drink all the time, aren't that bright, high level of homelessness etc and pretty much every meme about them is accurate. They're getting to be pretty rare in more recent years, I don't really see any in Melbourne or Adelaide anymore, but they still exist in droves in Northern Territory and northern Queensland. They make up something like 0.3% of the population of Victoria and South Australia as I recall, so you won't really see them there.

Blue eyed whites, especially girls, larp as natives, but will NEVER verify their ancestry at a reservation (an ethnostate city for natives only that has its own branch of government who administers it, often highly violent) and live there. Bro are you kidding? There is extreme hostility from abbos towards everyone, especially white people. They basically hate every race that isn't their own and they've gone after Asians and Indians purely based on race. The thing is that they're pretty fat and can be tipped over, so they don't pose a threat if unarmed or not in a major group.

Ask any bus or train driver in this country about abbos and they will have a story about them shouting racial things at people and being kicked off for not having a ticket, then call the driver a racist for asking them to pay for a ticket.

You need to develop the concept of Australia being its own centre from which to view other places. It's hard to explain to low IQ individuals, sorry. I hope you see what I mean some day.

it's arid as fuck and can't grow much, as a result everything would have to be imported inwards which is expensive as shit, same with the north here

Anywhere you have massive populations the explanation is some environmental quirk that creates outstandingly fertile land. It's true in India, in China, in Africa. It enables things like double harvests, which is why any place with such land and the weather that enables it has a habit of having long standing ancient empires.
