you have many months or even a year+ between the first time you show up at the conscription office for paperwork+medical check (often while you're in highschool still) and when you're called to go to bootcamp. in the meantime you're considered a 'defense service candidate' and it's sort of a chaotic and very obscure system where you can literally call/mail/contact army units and ask to go get tested for selection to those, and if you dont get selected and 'pulled out' of the default route you get assigned something automatically (but they ask you to rank preferences and usually people get one of their top ones)

anyways i wasnt selected for the airforce but did pass selection to another unit and dropped out because of illness/injury during bootcamp. i wont say where i ended up for privacy's sake but its a vary chaotic process in the idf no two soldiers have the same story of how they got where they got

i do have coworkers/friends that are army reserve pilots (after their normal pilot service is done, they do a fuckton more reserve duty than any part of the army theyre basically 1/4 soldier in terms of time spent on it)

i feel like i'd be ok in that job but i definitely wouldnt be a long term career pilot

dont think you can tell that from just the head
eagle on the tail is 69 hammer squadron, you can also see their emblem above it (black and yellow). its the army's heavy bombing squadron

having a solid understanding of physics is very helpful for a fighter pilot thoughbeit. though I'd say a mechanical or electrical engineering degree would cover enough too.

you need to be able to understand the dynamics of flight itself, the performance envelope of your plane and that of the enemy, the factors that govern how air combat works (plane, missile performance etc), and most importantly, be able to grasp how all the systems on board your plane function to know what to do when they're acting up

you can learn all of this with a nutrition science degree doe, in reality pilots just have to do relatively simple math on the fly

it's not about doing math on the fly, it's about having the prior understanding necessary to quickly pick up necessary concepts and insights.

fighter pilots are the ranked PVP players of aviation while everyone else does PVE on easy. the difference in the level of comprehension required is like night and day. you need to understand every system on your jet, the sensors and the ways in which they might fail or be spoofed, the weapons systems, make sense of various disjoint observations across multiple information sources, and understand the E-M dynamics of both your own plane and the missiles flying around to survive
