Honest question for Vietnamese anons.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if South Vietnam/America won the Vietnam war?
Like do you ever look at Japan and South Korea and wonder, "We could have been that."?

South Vietnam was hilariously corrupt. The US government literally staged a coup on them despite the country being ruled by a puppet government that the US itself installed. Also reminder that Korea was a third world country up until the 90s when the US started investing in them to spite the Japanese.

I'm sure you probably mean the ones that live in Vietnam, but as a diaspora, sometimes I think of how different life would have been. But given how my life is right now, I'm rather grateful that I didn't grow up with the formality/hierarchy of eastern culture. Modern Japan, South Korea, and to a certain extent, China, seems rather grim for living. Granted, SEA countries are usually more relaxed, but even the Asian culture I grew up with my parents here in the USA feels so stifling.

Of course, because I think that a country's development is more detrimentally affected by its leadership, the characteristics of its citizens, and the right timing than by choosing the "right alliance."
Korea and China wouldn't have become industrial powerhouses if not for their hardworking people and great leadership that took advantage of globalization to establish their industrial and technological bases and profit from them.
But in recent years, the trend of globalization has been dwindling; coupled with the fact that non-East Asians aren't as productive, which is why I think the chance of seeing another miracle in Asia is very slim and the thought of us becoming another South Korea feels like a fantasy.

You're right that the South Vietnamese government was corrupt and a puppet of the United States. However, it was the coup that marked the beginning of both the deployment of U.S. troops and the escalation of direct U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The first presidency was essentially authoritarian and oppressive, but I'd argue that it did a decent job compared to later administrations.

The successful Asian Tigers mainly South Korea, Japan and Taiwan were subsidized by hundreds of billions of Free American Aid and Investments.

Whereas the Philippines barely received 5 Billion US dollars in total since independence from the USA.

>During the Cold War between the Capitalist United States and Communist Soviet Union, in Asia, despite being devastated by World War 2, defending US interests, and being a former colony, the Philippines, received negligible financial assistance from the United States with only $5 Billion US Dollars worth of aid in totality since Independence[17] compared to the copious amount of free development aid given to other Asian allies like: Israel ($317.9 Billion US Dollars in free aid),[18] South Korea ($119.9 Billion US dollars in free aid)[19][20] South Vietnam ($104 Billion Dollars in free aid),[18] Taiwan, ($41.81015 Billion US Dollars in free aid by year 1975[21] which convert to $242 Billion US Dollars in 2024 values as adjusted for inflation)[22] and Japan,[23][24] as the United States considered their economic development more important than that of the Philippines because they had hostile Pro-Soviet Union neighbors which the United States were opposed to.[25]
