The Police is not involved. There are lawyer offices specialised on that. They will seed copyrighted material and sue the people with german IP that download it. They can get your personal information through a courtruling by simply asking your provider.
You have to pay up and write that you will never again download this specific film again.

Wtf that's fucking entrapment, how is that allowed? We also have a lawyer firm here in Finland who does copyright trolling but they only catch people by having isps snitch on torrenters who don't use a vpn.

It's technically not a fine but their process costs they make you pay. You can also simply not pay them but then they will actually sue you what will come you even more expensive. You will lose the case if you go against it.

It's the same here, though they very rarely actually sue and it's better to throw the threat letter in the trash unopened than respond in anyway.

i think the purpose of the letters etc was to make you admit to what you have done and only then can they charge you with the crime because tying an IP address to a person can be tricky
i ignored them because i was lazy but in hindsight it was the smart choice to avoid them trapping me

They do sue you here actually because we have some offices that are specialized on that.
I obviously didn't just pay straight up but consolidated a lawyer and that's what he recomended me according to his experience. In all cases of ignoring they sued and he lost the case kaing it more expensive for the client.

They get your IP that commited the crime and taking it to a court to get a permit to persecute a crime. WIth the court permit they can get the actually user data from your internet provider. You don't have to confess anything the crime is already proven.
