If you take anyone as soft as that man appears to be, put him on the range, and don't warn him about things like recoil and hearing damage, he's going to have a bad time.
I managed to not knock myself on my ass the first time I fired a rifle, but I definitely had to adjust everything I was doing. "Careful, it kicks." really doesn't do a 700 justice.
