I know that during the Cold War the Dutch wanted to either keep West Papua or set it up as a Dutch aligned independent state rather than give it to Indonesia. But the Indonesians refused to relinquish their claim and started buying weapons from the Soviets who backed them, which scared Kennedy of a Communist aligned Indonesia so to keep that from happening we completely stabbed our Dutchbros in the back and forced them to hand it over even though the indigenous people didn’t want to join.
