Empires were established in pre-capitalist times and although of course they were class civilisations and transformed societies, they didn't change the character of the economy: a farmer, a craftsman and a shepherd still kept doing what they were doing, but now the amount and the person their tax was directed to, would change.
With the "discoveries", it was thw european metropoles that changed which led to the transition of all economies and thus societies, to capitalism i.e. an economy where trade becomes central, instead of developing in the periphery of surplus production. With the europeans, labour becomes waged, natives have to change their whole lives, from how they spend their labour time to even their religion (whereas empires were, as a rule, tolerant of local religions and conversions were a matter of utilitarianism).
