My best friend would call his mom every single fucking day, no matter where we were or what we were doing, sometimes in the middle of getting fucked up, just to tell her everything he did that day and telling her some of our secrets like "Anon just dumped his girlfriend and kissed another girl" or some shit like this that's completely irrelevant to his own life and family. It pissed me the fuck off you have no idea, and he would get defensive if we just called him a mommy's boy.

I don't think it's typical of a culture. I have met only a couple of people who would call their opposite-sex parent for anything at anytime, in a weird unresolved oedipal complex.
Pretty sure it happens in Asia too.
