My kung fu teacher was inducted into a group of hongmen/chinese mafia by his teacher. Somewhat unorthodox because he himself isn’t chinese (japanese-hawaiian dad, irish mom). His teacher sent him to another city to teach a friendly gang’s members. Ultimately the deal fell through somehow and he opened his own school.
From the sound of it though, the criminal activities of these groups are behind them and they’re basically just old dudes that play cards together.
