It's more simple to say that rape and murder are simply things that soldiers do, and that the only way to avoid those things is to not have a war to begin with. They did the things they did because they hated the Chinese, not due to food shortages or anything like that. In a similar way, the Nazis hated the Jews, the Poles, the Russians, and so also did deplorable things to them. Even the foreign soldiers who occupied Japan, who hated the Japanese, did the same things in Japan that Japan did in China.
