All Ukrainians speak Russian and some Ukrainians also speak Ukrainian. I can say a few words in Russian, but it would be hard for me to discern between the two languages. Although I heard that Ukrainian is closer to Polish and I know that Polish sounds like complete gibberish to me.

I had a Ukrainian refugee girl as a work-experience student intern for a little while; she spoke decent English and was bilingual in Ukrainian and Russian. She spoke Ukrainian at home with her mom but a lot of her education had been Russian-medium. She didn’t really speak German yet (one of the reasons she landed on my desk, as mine was one of the few departments in the company where the working language is more English than German), but probably does by now. She seemed pretty smart.

She’s also unapologetically gone from a refugee to an aspiring economic migrant—she wants to work in finance and hopes to stay in Zürich forever.

So I don’t think you’re going to interest her in moving to America. Maybe if she wanted to work in tech—your tech salaries are often higher than ours. But our bankers do just fine and our quality of life is better in a lot of ways.

You get like 10 days off a year (Minimum here is 28, I get 35), go bankrupt if you need healthcare, there’s no public transport, you have basically no rights as a worker outside of like 3 unionised industries, nobody can afford a house anywhere except incest canyon Wyoming, and the police can shoot you for looking at them wrong.
Unless you’re already rich, or are in the tiny percentage of Americans making $200k+/year, it sounds fucking awful.
