Making friends while playing sports is a combination of skills+sociability. The better you play, the less you will have to talk. But if you're extremely funny and make others laugh, you don't need to be as skilled and can even afford to make some mistakes. Depends if it's an amateur casual setting or a professional one.

Nobody was bullied. He just didn't fit in. When you join a large group you are sort of pressured to mold yourself to the group's liking. That's how people work.
If you have a lot of charisma you might manage to retain your independence while maintaining cordial relationships with the group but that's hard for most people.

Similar experience when I was on my elementary school’s basketball team, to be fair though I had no business being on that team and only made it because there weren’t enough other good players that tried out.
After that it was solo sports only for me, which actually went really well as I became a regular medalist in triple jump at all the track & field meets for the rest of middle and high school
