Why does the word for "mother" start with M in so many languages?

There's no way that's a coincidence.

It's not a coincidence. It's because 'M' is one of the easiest sounds to make. It will almost always be the first sound that a baby makes. It's why mama is the word for mother in so many languages, even those that are not connected.

That's because babies tend to mumble something along the lines of mama and baba/papa when they start speaking. Also words change over time, the PIE word for father started with a p iirc.

All IE languages descend from the same proto-language, in which "mother" was *méh2tēr. You also have *ph2tḗr ("father"), but Germanic languages underwent a /p/ > /f/ shift.
