Japanese is different. First, it was something you had to study and invest yourself in deeply to even begin to participate in (back before streaming), and it later grew to a cradle-to-grave subculture, even for those of us in the West.
Chinese media generally isn't compelling enough for people to dig into it, and it isn't so broadly popular that the average person would want to hear and speak mandarin.
It's actually more of a struggle to learn than Japanese due to the differences in sentence structure and expression; there has to be something to latch onto for people to take the leap.
