I have ship of Theseused my PC. Only the case and the power supply are the same from when I first bought it. Might get a new GPU pretty soon because it's starting to get pretty old.

I am an unapologetic phoneposter more often than not; I use a second-hand iPhone 11. When I went in to buy it (to replace the broken iPhone 11 I got new with my phone contract back when it was closer to modern—I think the 12 had just come out at the time) the little shop teenager struggled to understand that I didn’t want something newer. I didn’t, because I didn’t give a shit. The mania for having the newest model of everything and chucking it every nine months for the latest version disgusts me.

My laptop is similarly venerable—I think I got it seven years ago at this point. But it’s actually dying, so I’ll be upgrading to something new within a few months. Whatever I get to replace it will be economical and fairly basic, and I will hold on to it until it dies. I don’t game, I don’t code, and I’m not interested in showing off, so my needs are modest.

I am not especially rich by Swiss standards, although I am doing fine. But that’s not the point, anyway—it’s less about saving money (although I am also somewhere between frugal and cheap) and more about not churning through a series of more expensive products than I actually need faster than I actually need them. It’s a shitty way to allocate and consume resources, and it’s shitty for the soul to spend just because you can, and even worse to spend just so that others can see you do it. It’s also a waste of money. But the money’s the least important variable.
