Greek is literally the fundation of everything European. Everyone else is European by proxy. Also not a dead language (making up neologisms in Latin is a pain in the ass) and quite close to its classical version. And Greece being completely irrelevant makes it easier to shill it as a "neutral language". Italian or any other romance language (like French lmao) are too politically loaded.

No fucking shit, demotic Greek is an artificial language. It intentionally replaced Turkish loanwords with the archaic Koine ones. Pontic Greek, for example, doesn’t have these words.
