It wasn't killed. It just naturally degenerated into various Romance dialects throughout the former Roman Empire, and survived in its classical form for liturgical and pædagogical purposes amongst upper-class people.
I reckon pure Classical Latin was probably more widely taught in the United States of America and the UK than it ever was in most of Latin America. In fact, even today, there are more colleges and universities in the United States of America that teach Classical Latin and Ancient Greek than in all of the lands between Tijuana and Tierra de Fuego.
