We have to pay first to enter the train or express bus platforms. City buses use cards or mobilephones to pay as you enter the door. There are auxillary policemen at all train and bus stations who can arrest you if you tried to sneak in.

Nope. They do random inspections on pretty much every bus, train and tram here in Gothenburg. And they do not hold back, you don't pay they hold you down until police arrive if you try to run. And there's like a dozen of them at the same time.
Why? Immigrants weren't paying so they had no choice.

No I have legal pension so I ride very cheaply just like senior citizens. Under half price on mornings and weekends and 30% off on weekdays during rush hour.

I rode the bus for five years and the drivers would throw me off if I didn't pay so I do. Now I drive because even the worst traffic is more tolerable than being on a local bus. A commuter bus, maybe.

anyways in my city I can evade the bus fares just fine, at this point I think most do
but trains are another story, it's pretty random but short trips on the regional line is unlikely to check while medium or long ones are almost a given
