the one I really don’t get is window A/Cs. They’ll be making fun of us for not having one, meanwhile they think this ghetto shit is fine.

Not gonna lie, I have fumbled with window handles in multiple countries trying to figure out why they wouldn’t tip in like a normal window before coming back to my senses.

But they’re not usually three-way in a lot of parts of Europe, either. I think of them as more of a Germanic thing.

Those things are ugly as hell, but they do work—I spent much of my childhood in Murka and my Swiss father was happy to haul an ancient version of pic related up from the cellar at least once every August. They’re certainly more effective than the portable bullshit that people here will pay €400 for.

But more importantly and Eurocentrically, good building and common sense can render any form of air conditioning unnecessary in a civilized, temperate country.

They're cheap and you can put them in the garage when you're not using them.

With the size and weight of that thing (>>212035311), might as well get a wall AC.
I've never seen those window AC's here, everybody has the wall ones.

I always assumed that the point of the window units was that they could be “installed” and removed at will/seasonally. It’s been some years since I lived in the States, but I know that places where someone might want AC year-round have a lot of different approaches to permanent installation.

That's mostly it. They don't require you to make any modifications to your house or apartment and they don't use a lot of electricity to run. You put it in your bedroom window and plug it in when you're in there, then when summer is over you take it out and use it as a coffee table until next year.

We don't use it year-round in the colder states, but we do still use it every single day in summer.
If you KNOW you're going to need it every summer, might as well put it up on the wall.
Yeah, you can remove the window AC's, but wall AC's don't take up any space you're using so there's no need to. It's like a painting you hang on the wall.

Window AC also have much lower efficiencies and mess with the insulation.
I really wish we had AC in our homes. This w-e temperatures rose up to 38c all day long

You aren't supposed to leave them running all day. Just from the hottest parts of the afternoon and when it gets muggy right before dusk.

iirc these things are far less efficient and more noisy than normal ACs. but normal AC requires you to drill a hole in your wall.
