>>212100656In the U.S. many of us are "functionally illiterate", meaning that while we can read and write, the quality of reading and writing is just good enough to get by. Many people struggle with reading comprehension especially with longer texts, and our vocabulary and grammar is also dumbing down.
Fewer people are voluntarily reading anything longer than a paragraph, and even fewer habitually read articles and books. This functional illiteracy is gradually becoming more and more dysfunctional which I predict will eventually become full illiteracy if measures aren't taken against the mind-rotting effects of short-form media and instant gratification.
The way we are taught to read is also contributing to young Americans' declining literacy.
