Why do English people care so deeply about Doctor Who?

Any time there is a casting change, it makes front page news across all their media outlets.

Britain has followed America's lead and become a nation of gibbering little toddlers.

We don't. And we haven't since David Tennant was the main actor 15 years ago.
The BBC just pushes it constantly, as hard as they can, because they're desperate for it to be relevant and a success.
In reality only low functioning autistics and queer 13 year olds watch it.

You are wrong. Sure, if the lead role has an actor change, that gets reported. But it's certainly not the biggest news.

I don't think that many people watch Doctor Who.

We don't, but it's a massive cultural export, so the BBC has to run constant articles about it to remind people that it exists. Nu-Who is widely hated even by its fans in the UK, especially since they started making pro-corporate episodes about how great megacorporations are.

English people generally haven't cared about Doctor Who since 2009

Smith was cast at the time Who was at its height, and Capaldi was cast immediately after the 50th anniversary.
Now they make news because they're obsessed with baiting the press.
Whittaker's casting made news obviously because she's the first woman, same for Gatwa making news because he's black.

Also it's worth noting just how less of a spectacle the casting has become.
Making the news is one thing, that's a given.
Smith and Capaldi had special shows dedicated to their announcements. Then Whittaker just had her announcement in the middle of Wimbledon, then Gatwa's casting announcement was just dropped casually on Twitter. That should tell you how much the show has declined.

It's very funny how clearly political nu-Who is.
It's simultaneously hyper-progressive and gay on all social issues, while also being hyper-capitalistic, pro-big corporations, etc.
