It is more soy to go out in your soymobile that you pump soyjuice into and shell out thousands of dollars per year to get onto a road with hundreds of other soymobiles because you're too afraid to be out of your safe space surrounded by other people.
Our entire infrastructure should be reworked to become walkable/bikeable. And everyone else can take trains or buses. Most people don't need cars, most of us can barely afford them.

I'm one of the fortunate few who live within a comfortable walking distance of a grocery store without having to cross any dangerous roads. And to top it all off I live in a small, mostly unwalkable town and not a city; so it's more of a happy accident than anything.
Most of us don't have that option. Cars are more of a necessity than anything. It's not just the infrastructure being unfavorable for walking or biking, it's also how spaced apart everything is. Residential and commercial are kept separate and they're divided by busy roads and highways and long distances apart. So for anyone to go without a car and just walk or bike they'd have to put up with long distances and unsafe conditions unless they live in the few walkable cities/towns or a walkable part of an otherwise unwalkable city/town.
It'd be a huge effort to restructure the entirety of the country's infrastructure and revamp its zoning laws and such to make it walkable again and would take years of coordinated efforts and action, but that's what happened with cars. The automotive industry got us to tear everything down and center all of our urban planning and infrastructure around the assumption that everyone will have a personal vehicle.
But that's part of what got us fat and unhealthy, and is economically and ecologically unsustainable and costing Americans too much so it's gotta happen some time. Hell even driving would be made better by giving people other options. More people on buses, trains, and bikes, and their own two feet would make driving a lot better of an experience with much less traffic.

I agree with with everything you said and I can also relate because I live in a small shithole town too. I spend 2 hours commuting with my car every day, I could take the bus but then my commute would take twice as long because the buses are slow and the routes are inefficient.

Funniest of all is that we had a railway in this town but they demolished it in 1954 because "cars were the future", now they are investigating the possibility of building it again.
This short-sightedness is enough to drive me crazy sometimes.

How fat and unhealthy car dependant communities are is not talked about enough, my car dependant shithole down is 1,5 hours away from Copenhagen, the people there are overwhelmingly fit and beautiful. My town? Fat fucking beer bellies everywhere, double chins and people start walking with a limp when they turn 50.

it's not what Americans want it's what we were forced to inherit. and now people are used to using a luxury item as a daily commuter so you can't persuade them otherwise. cars should be reserved for family vacations or emergency hospital trips, you should not have to use something every single day that depends on third party fuel being purchased.

>particularly with the world population set to decline

>when they only people who actually care about the environment, whites, being the main ones declining
I don't buy the idea this is a white people thing when a lot of 3rd world countries seem to be taking this more seriously than the west. What really determines whether people care about climate change is a mix of self-interest, economic status and education.
Pretty much every country in the world recognizes climate change is real, and then there's a few (like America) that like to sometimes pretend like they don't even if they really do. Older politicians who'll be dead in 10 years and sociopath billionaires have no interest in addressing climate change because doing it would be difficult and potentially cut into their profits, so if you can maintain climate change as a culture war topic through propaganda, good!

americans can build cities wherever they want, no one is chained to a given metro area, in indianapolis, they just built carmel to the north and it has it's own city center, business district, shopping centers etc all separate from indianapolis even though it's right next to it; except for certain places like nyc or la/sanfran, most americans do not live anywhere they would need to travel longer than like 45 minutes each way to get to work, euros think sprawl means people drive 3 hours from distant suburbs to get to work in the city center, no they just build new city centers when distance becomes a problem.

and living density and cars are just one aspect of the environment, why get autistic about that when it would make more sense to get autistic about nuclear energy or ev's or any of the other million things that would improve emissions other than everyone riding a bike?

You speak about breaking from the comfort zone but carless equals urbanite equals sedentary in the city. You never leave your comfort zone unless it's a bus to another city center for a prog rock show

the corolla is the most sold new car, not the most sold used car (though it probably is by sheer numbers), you think everyone is driving a beat up used corolla when in truth everyone is driving a nice new corolla, which although relatively cheaper and fuel efficient, is not THE cheapest nor most fuel efficient in america and certainly not the world. you really think all americans HAVE to drive $50k cars or else they're not prosperous? americans certainly drive the most luxury cars of anywhere in the world AND they do it as a median i bet (most people are driving the nicest cars out of any other "most" group anywhere)

I don't think I would be able to do what I want to do without a car. A lot of the time I'm just driving downtown, parking in the town parking garage, and buying small things like groceries. I know I can just walk downtown in about 40 to 45 minutes but I feel awkward carrying around groceries from a previous purchase into a new store. I like using the trunk of my car to safely contain stuff while I go into another shop to browse. I will say that when I'm just going to one store about a mile away, a 15 minute walk, I have bought some boards and walked home.

I didn't say used cars were beat up, I've bought one myself that looked new from the outside. but if you have to rely on a secondhand market for something so exceedingly necessary, you have a problem. maybe if Americans would get the fuck over their childish prejudices against small hatchback vehicles then this wouldn't actually be a problem, but it is.

because they are loud and annyoing taxi very expensive as well when we could just use a bus. I can not here electic cars in the morning after bar but can see a bus or train, cars are basically a weapon in the wrong hands of people. Walking is good because it is free and makes you not fat.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, transportation here has its limits. In stages I've walked from Santa Rosa to San Francisco. I've taken a local train from my home to other places in Sonoma and Marin. But sometimes you need to go places the train doesn't run to.

And if I want to go from Sonoma to Sacramento it's much easier to go by car. Taking public transportation would take me 4 hours. 2.5 hours on a bus just to take me to the train, then 1.5 hours on the train itself to take me to the destination. By contrast it's just 2 hours by car, 3 if there's heavy traffic.

Instead of trying to make a single family suburb walkable somehow, urbanists should chose a old depopulated east coast city with "good bones" and mass migrate. not only would reimplementing public transport be much easier, but they would have more political power than in a suburb full of boomers concerned about theirs home value.
