It wouldnt have been colonized by white people as french population was already stabilizing as opposed to other european countries still in a demographic explosion, and not a lot of french people were willing to leave France compared to other european countries.
Our sole settlement colonies were Québec (taken over because not enough french people there to defend it), Algeria (nobody wanted to live there so most of the french settlers in Algeria were recent iberian migrants) and New Caledonia (even today whites are a small minority)
