Of all the things the show made worse stannis got it the absolute worst. They wouldn't let the man have any of his cool monologues or moments. The showmakers clearly weren't interested or had some bone to pick with stannis. Like they made him go and beg the iron bank for a loan like a cuck when in the book the iron bank sent somebody to him.

Also in the books Stannis has some mountain clans on his side are doing guerilla warfare like building traps in the snow or driving the forces in Winterfell crazy by making noise outside. Also not everyone in Winterfell is loyal to the Boltons and Freys and people start murdering each other and are going crazy, so they give up their advantagous position inside the castle and ride out to meet Stannis on the field
