What’s even the point in learning a foreign language if you’re never going to speak at the same level as a native?

I adopt this mentality to all hobbies, skills, or other new things I learn and it’s quite depressing really because ultimately you realise that there’s no point in doing anything

There really is no point anymore with Ai, not saying Ai will be revolutionizing everything but as far as languages go Ai will make language learning completely redundant , we already have ai capable simultaneous translations tools for most languages and they are only getting better, in a couple years everybody will possess the tools integrated to seamlessly communicate with every human on the planet without language barriers , it's not science fiction anymore its Ai future

For me it was the ability to watch anime without crappy subtitles (and dubs are disgusting), read original manga, play imported Japanese games and actually get around Japan without Google Translate.

it was worth every minute of studying.

It will be simultaneous translation and since AI can literally mimick your voice it will be like you speaking in every language and you will also hear the other person's natural voice speaking in your language

Why would you only halfass a language? You want to be B1 for the rest of your life? What’s the point in that?

>>212120363
It’s rewarding to make progress and see results, but at the same time every time you hear
>Your [Japanese/German/French etc] is so good!

It’s like a subtle reminder that you’ll always be the gaijin and even if you look like a native as soon as you open your mouth you’re found out. There will always be some idiom you don’t understand, some word you don’t know, or some idiosyncrasy that you are unaware of. Especially for anglos, since everyone worldwide has already studied English since they were 1month in the womb versus you most likely picking up a second language in your late teens or twenties. Not to mention that English is the lingua Franca so people (even native speakers) are used to ESL’s with an accent or something, and you’re that eccentric foreigner that tries his best to speak Estonian and everyone pities

Its possible to speak at or above a native. Lots of natives are only at c1 (c2 is advanced literature and things like that). You will never *sound* exactly like a native which is no big deal

Human IQ is normally distributed; i.e. lots of native speakers are retarded (literally). You are not going to speak at a higher level than someone who got through high school or uni. This is like telling an ESL that he can speak English better than some Ebonics gorilla.

And I enjoy that. I love the Japanese and their love for foreigners who speak the language. It's always appreciated and I've had more conversation because of that, than for any other reason.

And you still get patronized by Japs for holding a basic conversation. It’s the same idea as praising the retard for holding a job at McDonald’s and expecting more of a regular person.

If I came to Sweden and really applied myself at the language you’d appreciate it but I’d always be that goofy American who really wants to learn Swedish for some reason. Odds are you would always have it in the back of your mind that Swedish isn’t my first language and give me a pat on the head when I got something right grammatically but think a native speaker was retarded if he made the mistakes I did. Even if only subconsciously you’d treat me differently. I would rather have every single sentence I speak be ripped apart every day than have some patronizing fuckhead smile and tell me my “Swedish is so good!” for speaking at an A2 level.

And yet OP is a perma-A2 in Spanish. How does it feel? This is why you need to learn at minimum a second language, so you're not brain mogged by thirdies.

No, I have two Americans working in our office. They speak adequate Swedish and nobody cares.
This sound more like a problem living in our own head than irl.
