Portuguese is a Spanish dialect the only reason its considered a separate language is because France and England btfo'ed Spain in the war of Portuguese restoration

This isn't a Austrians and Swiss speak funny German situation, both Spanish and Portuguese are completely different languages, obviously there's going to be similarities because of their shared history, but their similarities aren't as close as people make it out to be.

The only reason Portuguese is considered a language in its own right is because it was an independent kingdom and used it as court and prestige language, if that weren't the case the people would have just gradually adapted to more and more Spanish speaking, that's usually what happens. It's the same here though dialects can vary widely but if they aren't prestige language the peasants will just adapt gradually to the nearest prestige dialect
