The Enlightenment was the only time the jews really became of note because they were allowed to intermingle with the rest of society. The Enlightenment was a mistake, and the individualism that it entailed.
Mizrahi jews were irrelevant until the 1940s in the Muslim world because they had their senses and kept them separate.
Also the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth being such a decentralized mess allowed Ashkenazi jews to overshoot their ecological niche in population numbers. That's a big reason they started causing problems in the 19th century onwards.
