Portugal was a base from Protestantism in quintessential Papist peninsula in the context of 30 Years War that basically decided if Protestants or Catholic were the ones to hold the power in Europe for the next 200 years.

People don't think about this a lot, but Portuguese people and Spanish people are quite apart from one another, and Portuguese people are quite "insular" in relation to Europe.
Historically we've been enemies in the scope of larger Euro conflicts, mostly because Spain sided with France and Portugal sided with England.
When not fighting these euro-wars both countries held great diplomacy between each other.

Nowadays it's all within the greater E.U., and I'd say we get along with Spain as well as we do with France, Germany, etc.

You would be surprised of the amount of Portuguese immigrants living there, the nationals called them "Porto goes" but not despectively. Now argentinians are migrating there for hospitality jobs.

We do not care about them and they do not care about us. Just ambivalence all around. Yeah, there are a few jokes about them wanting to conquer us, but really they just come here to vacation. There is some annoyance over dams and whatnot, but very minor. I suppose that might grow worse if their country does become a desert. Still, it's mostly just indifference from both sides. I don't think there's a feeling of brotherhood that you might see, say, between Nordics. The closest to that (in our case) is Galiza, and it's one-sided on their part, no one here cares about them. They are better off without us too, they'd instantly be the richest part of the country if they joined us, and everyone would leech off them.

That will change sooner than some would like to think. Spanish farmers already chimp out daily over wanting to build a tagus dam.

That's just a LARP promoted by the intellectual elites to try to claim a national identity where there wasn't a cohesive one, in an effort to make the locals more resilient to external influence. We're a nation of mongrels from the beginning. The lusitanian culture was almost entirely unknown when we started adopting it, it still is largely, we just picked it out of the lot because of the convenient geographical proximity, we could just as well have claimed cultural or "spiritual" (whatever that means) continuity to the Ofíusa, an older people who at least had cool imagery we know about, surrounding snakes.
