is there any proof that the american style hellish bootcamp actually has any benefits? i did not go through anything close to that and our basic training leaders became part of the team. i would rather have a leader that got my back and i his than one i desire to kill more than i desire to kill the enemy because he just cant stop being an asshole.

ecactly. kill the enemy, not each other. my leuthenant was also some secret nato special op's, he had to leave us for a few weeks to do one final mission in balkans (im that old...) and when he came back you could see in his eyes and hear it in his voice that he had seen some cruel shit, this final mission had broken him. he had done such missions all over the world and was crazy af when i got in when he returned from his last mission he was over the top. but he never used violence, he called us fags and all that, sexualised our mothers, threaten to assfuck us all, but never too much and would buy us all beer the same evening being our best buddy. he was captain miller from SPR only full of ptsd and crazy af. he gave us everything he had in experience and none of that bootcamp shit.

I've no doubt that there's effective training methods where the point is to put everyone under severe strain, but just because some mouthbreathing mong who had trouble finishing 5th grade exploits his authorative power doesn't necessarily mean he's training cold-blooded killers at the same time.
