Why do they call themselves Romanians, instead of using the proper name Vlachs and naming their country Vlachia? It's really cringe for them to appropriate the name Roman despite not having anything to do with them.

Vlachs is an exonym given to them by the Slavs. They themselves called themselves Romans, because they were subjects of the Byzantine Empire.

„Vlach” is an exonym referring to Latin/Romance-speaking population(s).

By the default definition, all autochthonous Romance-speaking people & countries could be called „Vlachs” or „Vlachians”, respectively their countries combined named generically as „Vlachia”.

Of course, this was settled for „Latin” and „Romance” with their regions' namesakes, but, this' just to present you what's behind the term.

So for example, if we were in our ancestors' epoch, you'd call me a „Vlach” and I'd call you a „barbarian tyrant/barbarian northman”.

100% agree
t. proud vlach
But the thing is moldovans have their pride too. Probably transylvanians would agree but moldovans wouldn't. Moldovans would want the country to be named Moldavia or Moldova

In Slovenia, where Romanians were not all that common (but not completely alien either - in Slovenian Istria, they were called Cincarji, but also Vlahi), 'Lahi' was an ancient term used to refer to pre-Slavic Romance-speaking populations, and later to Italians and Friulians, by which time it had become pejorative.

>They themselves called themselves Romans
true, more or less... we called ourselves roman adjacent, that is rumuni / rumâni / români which isn't exactly the same as romans

The original meaning of Roman citizen was forgotten as the Serbs and Bulgarians conquered the northern Balkans and the Romanians eventually migrated across the Danube because the Bulgarians liked Romanians better than the Serbs and Greeks, who discriminated against you legally.

Did you know that the Bulgarians and Romanians imported gypsies ON PURPOSE to serve as slave labor?

I don't think there are a lot of Gyppos in Transylvania, they mostly live in former Wallachia and Moldavia, where they were enslaved by the boyars as serfs for centuries.

Shows what I know. The concentrations in Transylvania almost exactly correspond to Szekely and Hungarian settlements, it seems, thus lending creedence to the famous expression 'Magyar cigany'

Exactly. Anyone who has an identity crisis claims the name Roman, then makes some shitty story to back up their claim. It's literally gypsy-tier behavior.
