There has been a happening and signatures have picked back up again. It's jumped by almost 100k in the last few days. Every signature counts if we're going to get this thing over the finish line.

Can it be re-done if it fails? I've heard that the reason a lot of countries didn't sign was because it was all in English and English proficiency isn't as high outside of nordicks and the germonkey gang

Not really. They could theoretically launch it again but there's no way it would pass without the momentum it's already gathered. It's not just about video games, either - this is the last chance for us to preserve digital consumer rights globally.

If you read the privacy policy, it states that the EU signatures are collected by the European Comission, essentially, and has nothing to do with SKG thing. But the signatures couldn't be public even if collected privately, due to GDPR.

>ECI - The European Citizens' Initiative, "Stop Destroying Videogames," is hosted and managed under a joint controllership arrangement between the European Commission (Operational Data Controller Unit SG.A.1 ‘Policy Priorities & Work Programme’) and the representative of the group of organizers of the initiative, or, where applicable, the legal entity established by them. "Stop Killing Games" promotes the initiative but does not exercise control over it nor collect any personal data directly.

They don't have to. It's just a suggestion. They can handle indefinite support however they want, but if they don't want to keep running servers long after bankruptcy, that's what they have to do.

Which is why this is dumb fucking initiative lead by and supported by people that have zero business sense or understanding of game development. Manchildren.

I actually don't agree with the initiative, because it's far too lenient on publishers and devs. Gaming can never heal lest online games are permakilled.

I'm sure video game companies can protec their IP, if everything allowed is basically keeping a zombie version of a game.
Video game IP already have plenty of laws, and taken actions, to stop actual IP abuse.

If you took a few seconds to read (a tall order for an American, I know), you would know what it's about.
>"Stop Killing Games" is a consumer movement started to challenge the legality of publishers destroying video games they have sold to customers. An increasing number of video games are sold effectively as goods - with no stated expiration date - but designed to be completely unplayable as soon as support from the publisher ends.

While petitions are as good as toiler paper in the US, the EU petition forces the EU to review it, and potentially discuss it in parliament, which could lead to consumer protection laws in favour of the initiative, which the SKG movement is banking on trickling down to the US and other parts of the world as well, since the EU is a big enough market that any substantial change often affects things worldwide (such as USB-C being made the EU standard forced Apple to drop their proprietary port).

Anyhow, look at WoW. If Blizzard's servers went down for good tomorrow, it wouldn't matter, because there are community servers aplenty keeping the game alive. This is exactly what SKG wants. A game is not to be rendered unplayable just because a studio or publisher decides they don't want to, or cannot, support it. Just like how Windows doesn't automatically uninstally itself when Microsoft drops support, or a car dealer takes back the car you bought in full after the warranty is up. No one in their right mind would be against this. Plus, EU citizens already have the right of access to digital goods, so a new law on this would essentially just be an extension.

Does this petition address that some companies sell "licenses" for playing a game rather than the game itself? I should be able to play Minecraft without the need to log in to a Microsoft account.
