You can rent this beautiful 1-bedroom apartment with washer/dryer and a south-facing balcony for just $1200 per month. Germans truly cannot suffer.

For a similar price, you can rent this furnished room in the Bronx, which has the advantage of being near a 99 cent store and a lot of barbershops and nail salons.

But Germans also earn less money. If I were to move there I would pay over 50% of my income for rent. Also 1200€ is not a good price for a flat outside of the big cities. If you live in a smaller town you could rent a small house for that

Why can't most of us live in affordable public housing and just be happy that we can have a roof above our heads without fearing that the landlord will kick us out next month?

Only luxury apartments have washer/dryer in America. Most hive dwellers have to lug their laundry down to the basement common laundry room.
