I am going to have to pay a $1,400 fee for the absolute privilege of being allowed to take out a $30,000 student loan

that's literally impossible in america. there's no such thing as a "cheaper university". it's either a university or a community college. if you want the real deal you gotta bend over and give up that ass.

30 thousand sounds about right. After all the grants the school gives you for low income, most people tend to have about 30k in student loan after 4 years of college.

yea it evens out but americans still come out ahead.

america had a chance to become a "normal" country if the democrats hadn't sold out bernie. now it's too late and they gotta suck the big banker cock. I'll leave the thread before the trump voters rip me apart.

I get that having free education would be difficult to implement at this point but why are universities in America that expensive to begin with? What are all the things covered by the tuition fee? In Serbia even private universities that don't get any government funding have like 10% of the fee you mention and that's on the higher end and even with our terrible salaries people generally don't struggle with paying it off. Granted we don't have any sports teams or research facilities and things like that but if its a cheaper university you probably don't have those anyways?

The reason why college is so expensive is because it became subsidized in the first place. It was affordable when there was actual merit into getting in, but now 80% of the "top state schools" have an extremely high acceptance rate. Ironically enough leading to the fact that people cant get jobs with degrees because theres a log jam of people with degrees applying to jobs.

Didn't Greece go bankrupt while having a culture of terminal students?

In Serbia private universities are fucking diploma mills. If you aren't a member of the ruling dictator's party or have no connections then you won't get a job after you "graduate".

Here and there you're starting to see companies hire superstar kids out of high school or sponsor their college education. I think I saw some of that anyway.
