The best way to learn a language is to force your neet fatass to go to the country and live there and surround yourself in it everyday speaking to the locals and reading.

Memorizing shitty cards and do your daily duolingo isn't going to do fuck all loser.

I don't even understand how it garnered such a cult following. It's literally just basic flashcard software.

No, just don't use anki for language learning? Just learn vocabulary and watch movies like the euros do with us to learn English or better yet, so that and play VRChat on server where whatever it is your targeted language happens to be is the primary language spoken

I'm doing a PhD. In fairness, I would say my German has progressed far more than most foreign PhD students here.

I sound extremely cringe and probably won't be able to get a job here after I graduate. For job applications if you're not totally fluent you might as well be A1

Then talk to more people or read or whatever. Learning a language as an adult is different than learning it as a child. You have to throw yourself off the deep end. Try using English less and less in your life. Make native friends. Get a hobby and speak German with others in that hobby. Watch German shows and movies. Read German books. The more you use a language the more you will absorb it. If you are constantly denying yourself that or put no effort you'll never learn it as an adult. If you are constantly avoiding it and using English all the time like right now you'll never learn it.

Or if you're an incel shutin use a chatbot or whatever

Are you speaking from experience or talking out of your ass? Even if you pick up 10 new words a day obtaining native level fluency still takes nearly a decade.

C2 English is about 10,000 words which is three years at that rate. Personally I would call C1 "fluent" or at least conversational, and that could be only 5000 words

I do what I can with the hours I have in the day. Graduate studies are no joke though timewise. Most other PhD students from outside Germany barely make any progress in the language, so while I could have done better, I also could have done much, much worse.

It's just flashcards. You're meant to do other stuff as well and use the flashcards as a complement to help you remember things.
