IMO It's a mix of med and balkan architecture, culture and mentality on the south and east with Slavonia having historical traces of what we call "Central Europe". All of these are about 70% of total land area. Only the area north of Zagreb (Zagreb itself is too mutted today) can be classified as "central" while Istria and parts of Kvarner are a mix of med and "central". North Dinaric forests in Gorski kotar and Lika transition perfectly from Slovenia to Bosnia which is actually quite impressive for such a small area considering those two countries are so different.

I've probably heard someone claim that Croatia is a Balkan country 3 times in my life and each time they were people from mixed marriages. Ties with other Central European countries are still strong, Croats go skiing in Slovenia and Austria, on trips to Prague, Bratislava or Budapest. And people from those countries are the most loyal Croatian tourists. It would be stupid to say that Croatia doesn't have some Balkan flavor, of course it does, but it's still a country divided into a continental/Central European and a coastal Mediterranean part.

I don't have any friends who are like that but I saw on video/ tv people at those kinds of concerts and some of my popular friends have or know people who are like that and unironically listen to serbian music. From my observations they or their parents are from Bosnia or parts of Croatia that historically had a population of Serbs, or they are literally just Serbs that live here.
