Latvians love Lithuanians and like Estonians.
We think that Estonians live Finns more, that is why we don't engage as much as we do with Lithuanians.

now that the prot. catholic split is less relevant, has there ever been talk of merging Lithuania and Latvia?

Never really was relevant in Latvia. We have a big part of the country (1/5) that is Catholic and we never had problems with that.
There always have been some limited talk of us joining to have more shared recourses, but it has never been considered as actual proposition by our governments.
I would love to see a unified Baltic state (Latvia, Lithuania AND Estonia)
We would be much stronger.
