In short, it was an answer to how god is good but allow evil to exist. It removes god from the world, making him a creator being but the world in its archytecture is evil and create by a demidivine being the demiurge. This is why there is suffering and you have a body.

Thats the super short answer, there are a lot of interpretations regarding god, the world or the soul.

it is a catholic thing, or reaction, only Christians will attribute physical world itself as evil
majority of new religions are just reaction towards the universal church

when it comes to different beliefs you have to go beyond culture, there is no way you can subscribe to a western theology and not be Christian-adjacent

Basically, the physical world was created by the Demiurge who is a Demon, and that is why there is so much evil and suffering. Whereas, our souls and consciousness were created by God, who is good. The goal under this belief, is to ascend your Earthly form and enter into the Kingdom of God by detaching yourself from the physical, which is evil.
