Paraná spent 225 years as part of São Paulo, being the last state to be dismembered, only gaining independence in 1853 as a punishment to São Paulo for its involvement in the liberal revolts of 1842.

Pretty sure a few other states were dismembered after 1842.
Amazonas was created around 1850, I think. Before that it used to be Grão-Pará.
Tocantins was created in 1988.
I think Mato Grosso do Sul is also new.

Fun fact: Palmas, like Brasília, was also created from ground up. It was founded in 1990.

Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, was also planned. It was built in the 40's, I think.
There's probably nothing interesting to do in these cities, to be honest.

Do they only look good at certain angles like this one?

No idea. Maybe. Roraima is one of the poorest states, I believe.
These cities were planned to help develop those previously sparsely inhabited areas of the country, much like Brasília itself.
