It was a much more dangerous city. I'm not sure if 9/11 was directly related to the change, but Giuliani was mayor at the time and he was the one who set the NYPD loose on the black and brown thugs and locked them all up. It was probably helpful that 9/11 made people more accepting of a police state.

I was there in June 2001 on my 18th birthday.
It was very cool back then at least. A lot of artists, musicians and events in random locations, good food, cool restaurants and music shops everywhere.
Haven't been back since.

Just watch Sex and the City, Home Alone 2, Die Hard 3, Money Train, etc. It was exactly like that.

New York was safe in the 90s. The 70s-80s was when it was crazy.

I forget if we ever owned New York or if it was New Jersey. I think we gave it to the Dutch either way.

dutchoids & swedoids made up maybe 1% of the population of colonial jew york and jew jersey, there were barely any settlers there when the british empire took it. interestingly though, there were dutch speakers in jersey as late as the 1840s, but it died out by the 1880s.

Not him but all my relatives live in Minnesota. Apparently like 10% of the state is Swedish-related.

Yeah that was a later migration, the Upper Midwest received a fuckton of Scandi settlers in the 1800s. Minnesota/Wisconsin area might be the one white area in the U.S where the majority of people are descended from Ellis Islanders rather than the old stock or old stock-ellis island mix like the rest of the U.S.

That's cool.
Though, it makes me wonder why my ancestors who left Sweden because of shitty climate, bad crops and cold decided to settle in one of the colder states.
Were there like "you can settle here" laws or something in place back then?

Well the South (basically everything below the Ohio River & Potomac River) is a humid subtropical sweltering land full of sweet tea sipping, mint julep drinking, Kentucky Bourbon wannabe aristo WASPs & a Scots-Irish underlclass that was violent & poor, along with a black underclass who also was violent & poor so had very little need to promote immigration due to having a labor force already, and wasn't that attractive to most immigrants to begin with.

The Northeast was industrialized so moving there meant you had to live in the city. Basically the Upper Midwest & Plains states still had lots of open, cheap land for immigrants to come nab up and become middle class farmers so that's why the late 1800s saw a lot of scandinavians & germans settle there.

Ah. Thank you. I have googled but finding info isn't easy.
Gonna visit my cousins next summer, looking forward to it. They are apparently gonna force me to sing folk songs at the local Swedish bar kek.
