>>212322172Well the South (basically everything below the Ohio River & Potomac River) is a humid subtropical sweltering land full of sweet tea sipping, mint julep drinking, Kentucky Bourbon wannabe aristo WASPs & a Scots-Irish underlclass that was violent & poor, along with a black underclass who also was violent & poor so had very little need to promote immigration due to having a labor force already, and wasn't that attractive to most immigrants to begin with.
The Northeast was industrialized so moving there meant you had to live in the city. Basically the Upper Midwest & Plains states still had lots of open, cheap land for immigrants to come nab up and become middle class farmers so that's why the late 1800s saw a lot of scandinavians & germans settle there.
