Nothing, people often parade so-called “original” opinions, like hating the French, thinking modern art is lazy, claiming vegans are annoying, or disliking pineapple on pizza.

These "takes" rarely stem from genuine personal reflection. Instead, they echo the pseudo-intellectual, recycled tropes of internet subcultures.

In reality, many of these "contrarian" (lel) retards lack the creativity or courage to form opinions outside the echo chamber of the internet. They are too afraid to be lynched online, so they adopt anything they see online if it's repeated enough. Ask them what they think of the Simpsons, and they might reply, saying that the episodes after Season 10 are trash, it doesn't matter if they actually watched an episode or not. They saw it on memes, so it must be true.

For example, one of the replies to your question was "the French speak it," an incredibly pathetic attempt at "humor." This is the type of person you're asking for advice.

Cope. Literally just talk to French people, on this board or elsewhere. There's only so many times you can see them defend the ban on paternity testing, the cheating, the pedophilia, the pervasive pseudoscience in psychology and medicine, the weirdly totalitarian language policy, the communist social policies - all from a position of unquestionable absolute superiority, invincibly ignorant, completely high on their own farts - before writing off the entire culture.

French is a language for talking to people who think they are better than you even though they have nothing to show for it. They have almost destroyed their own country, and in any multilingual country that has a French portion, that portion is worse than the rest.

Besides poor anglo-franco-colonial banters, I agree with you here, you can't think of a language as separate from people and culture. Learning French means dealing with the French people. And they are fine.

Lots of idiomatic expressions, which means you you have to learn tons of them to understand everyday French

They took comprehensible Latin words and corrupted them down to a single vowel, meaning the entire language is just a bunch monosyllabic words

Because of this, almost everything sounds the same and the only way to actually understand what is being said is contextually

Over reliance on ‘de’

Haters gon hate, still like French, but I think I'll quit learning the language. It's hard and I wonder if it's worth it for me. I'm also learning Spanish, and while I remember French better by ear (maybe I concentrate more), pronunciation is a nightmare. Italian and Japanese (also a language of homonyms, abbreviations and guessing from context) tempt me, and a potential migration would be easier to Germany. French sounds nice in movies and songs though.

Yes. Start learning quickly while you have the motivation. I once wanted to, but I wondered if I was sure, people said it sounds ugly, or maybe German is better etc. It took a few months, this fascination; seeing how simple the language is and similar to English I would probably speak fluently by then

Of course when it comes to women who you can impress by pretending to be cultured you're probably just better off with something Nordic, way better quality girls.

French, Middle French, Old French
Old English, Middle English (technically counts if you're a native English speaker)
Old Icelandic, Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish
Japanese, Classical Japanese, Japanese Kanbun
So that's three languages ultimately, I'm not ambitious enough for 4

Learned enough French to understand casual native content now, figure it's time to pick a new language to go for.
Should I roll with Swedish or Russian?
I am very interested in Russian culture but probably won't be able to reside there for a while now due to being a Giga-Anglo Devil in their eyes (Aus-UK-US triple citizen). Russia also has great literature, historiography, etc. I had a go at Russian flashcards in Anki and it's pretty fucking brutal though, absolutely no relation to any language I speak so of course learning even the most basic words is a monumentally hard climb for my 25 year old brain.
Swedish is obviously an 'easy' one, especially since I also learned German already, but my only connection to the culture is my dead grandfather and due to their small population their content availability is pretty shit.

>too much fantasising, not enough success
If you have this problem, you need a life that rewards you for success and punishes you for failure. Then everything will be easier. Most people are secretly terrible at working on anything for a long period of time without social/financial pressure or enjoying the process. Enjoying the process in language learning is kind of a meme because you need to put a lot of work in to reach a point where you can understand even the most basic things and then you need to be exposed to a lot of different uses of the language to get good at it.

I've read a few short stories that I found on Tadoku, the Wizard of Oz and Mushoku Tensei (the first book). I've also tried a few webnovels but the stories aren't really attractive generally I found.
On Tadoku you can find simplified versions of real stories and not things made for learners which I don't like.
I still haven't started Convenience Store Woman but I wanted to try because some said it was easy. I'll see. I hope it's easier than Mushoku Tensei at least.

I am trying to finish Zeit zu Leben, Zeit zu Sterben. It's pretty good, but no where close to Nichts Neues im Westen. Maybe the ending will blow my mind. I'm sure it will depressing one way or another.
